A Key Addition to Our Home
Ease of installation:I am not the best nor the worst at installing things around the house. I was expecting this to be a headache, but after watching some videos, I had this one set up within an hour.Reliability:It has worked every day since installation, with one minor hiccup in the first few days, where it would not open. I ended up having to use my key in that instance. The lockout may have been caused by my child repeatedly hitting the wrong buttons as she tried to let us in. I recommend keeping the key with you as a backup.Battery life:It is still working after a few months without issue. I will update my review if it suddenly stops working. Again, keep your key with you just in case.Verdict:The Kwikset Powerbolt 250 has been a game-changer for my family, and I only wish I had thought to install one sooner. It has made getting in and out of the house way less of a pain, especially at night. The buttons light up, making fumbling for a key a thing of the past. My six-year-old daughter knows the code as well, and she enjoys opening the door for us. My wife and daughter went for a walk the other day while I worked in the backyard, and they didn’t feel the need to carry their keys, knowing they could easily get back in, and I had my key in the backyard as a backup. There is a function to add a one-time code for someone making a delivery or doing work on your home, but I have not tried that yet.

Keypad, & Keyed Deadbolt
I have two of these deadbolts, & two of the keypad door locks. They are dependable, easy to install, & use.Even if the battery dies, they can be locked, & unlocked with with a key. This deadbolt, can also be re-keyed for additional security. I originally purchased this to allow a visiting family member to come & go without having to issue them a key. Another great feature is you can have different combinations for different purposes; one can be issued to a guest, another can be given to a contractor, & one for yourself. At any point, any, or all, combination(s) can be deleted, or reset to another combination. The instructions that come with this are easy to understand, and make the installation a breeze. It is very easy to add your own code for this deadbolt. It can also have a time delay lock feature so after you close the door & it will automatically lock the deadbolt. All features are easy to use, & setup. I would recommend these to anyone for their entry doors. These are reasonably priced, & dependable.I would recommend these to anyone who wants to have the ability to give a temporary code to a guest, or contractor while retaining your own code combination. The batteries seem to last a long time, especially since there are four “AA” batteries used for this deadbolt. It’s not only functional, but it looks appealing on our door. The pictures I have included show additional door hardware that is not included. This kit includes the deadbolt itself with a battery compartment, @ a keypad, section. It also includes all the necessary hardware to install this on your door. My installation was easy because I was replacing an existing deadbolt.I have included a picture that shows the indoor door knob, that is NOT INCLUDED, with this deadbolt. I added this just to show that it can be used with an optional door knob.

Perfect for my needs
Why did you pick this product vs others?:Bought this model because my current locks are all Kwikset, making rekeying easy. Also I now have a no-key-needed vehicle (card in my wallet). Now, I don’t have to carry a house key either. I like the look of the touch pad models, but I use one frequently and find that it’s harder to operate in the dark. It’s especially hard to find the first number, because the lock is dark until you press on the pad – “oops, wrong number again!” This lock is between my garage and utility room. Don’t care whether it matches the rest of my door hardware exactly. Easy to install, even easier to program and it has many features I don’t need (like automatic locking and 25 user codes), but you may find them useful. One note on rekeying the lock. Kwikset’s instructions are good, except I’ve never been able to get the rekeying tool into the rekeying slot as far as the instructions indicate. So, regardless of whether that tool is in as far as instructed, if you have the original key in the right position and, at the appropriate step in the instructions you can remove the old key, your ready to proceed with the new key. Comment on some of the negative reviews: The bolt and the striker plate on the door handle have to position this electronic deadbolt lock and striker plate so they engage smoothly, with little to no drag. I don’t think this battery-powered lock would last long term in a situation where the bolt has to fight its way into and out of the striker opening. Too high a load; something will eventually fry. In my case, I corrected just that situation before installation (found a stripped and cracked screw hole in the door frame). Fixing that takes a small amount of know-how but, if you’re replacing a smooth-operating deadbolt, this is an easy task.

Well made, smartkey easy, simple to install and use. Price is too high.
One less star for price, it is too high.I bought this over less expensive but very similar key pads because it was Kwikset, which made installation easy as the door hardware matched the existing Kwikset deadbolt. Another advantage, I was able to match my existing key with their “Smartkey” to this lock. The Youtube install video was helpful.

Happy with product
I’m happy with the price paid. Installation effort was same as installing any other keyed door locks. Family likes the code feature, easy to set or change, etc. I like that I can re-key the lock if needed ( and already have used this feature) with this lock. No issues.

For the past 10 years, I have used similar Kwikset locks on 4 of my outside doors and they have proven very reliable. About 6 months ago, added this one to door #5 and it works just as well as the others with the added benefit of being a little smarter/easier to set up, and needing one less button to push to operate it. As well, the mechanism is noticeably faster to lock/unlock. [FYI: if you use the recommended ordinary alkaline batteries, they will last about 2 years. If you try rechargeables (like I did) they last about 2 months. I have no idea why.]

My friend has this exact lock. I instantly fell in love with it when I was visiting her. I don’t have to worry about my key. I do keep it on me but it’s nice to be able to walk out the door and know it’s going to automatically lock seconds after. It’s nice and convenient especially because my kid doesn’t always latch the door or friends come in and don’t lock it and it can pop open. So when people come in it locks and the pets can’t get out. Gives me peace of mind when my hubby is away or when I’m home on my day off sleeping. I’ll never go back to a regular lock system.
