These are LARGE. I have seen reviews where people say they can hold 2 yards of soil (a standard 6ft truck bed with good suspension can hold 1.5 yards, level with the truck bed top). It is teue they can hold 2 yards of soil but man… You do NOT have to put that much soil in them to get the height you want. Instead, you can fill them like this with layers: 0. If you have a ground squirrel, mole, vole, etc problem: Set the bed on a single layer of 48" wide by 6.5 feet, 1/4" 'Hardware Cloth'. Its a metal mesh with 1/4" square pattern you can get at the hardware store. Squirrels can't chew through it like they can chew through chicken wire. 1. In the bottom, start with 3-6" of cardboard along the bottom. I even bring a single layer of cardboard all the way to the top for insulation. Labels and tape should be removed, no glossy finishes. Water the cardboard thoroughly. You will water each layer to make sure everything is moist and can break down into amazing compost. 2. On the cardboard, layer in 6" or so of weeds from around your yard and/or sticks, twigs or split logs (not pine/evergreens…). 3. Then 4-5" of grass clipping or other mulch, peat, etc that you have around or pickup at a nursery. Don't forget to soak each layer down with water. … 4. Then 1/2 yard of soil. 5. Followed by one bag of of manure compose… This can be the $5-10 compost bags. 6. Put 1/4 yard of soil on top of that. So you have a total of 12-18" of soil for your plants on top. 7. Plant your seeds, add your drip lines, then dust with a layer of certified weed-free straw to reduce evaporation. All in, you (and maybe your neighbors) proboably have enough mulch, grass clippings, tree pruning scraps, etc. Add a 5 dollar bag of manure, maybe a bag or two of mulch, compost and a bail of straw and you likely will only need to spend the 'big bucks' on soil. (I spent $140 on 1.5 yards of bulk garden soil from an organic nursey.) You really only need about 12-18" of soil for your plants to grow and below that you can be creating a whole ton of excellent compost nutrients than you can work into new soil the following seasons as the compost breaks down and compresses. —– I chose this 3ft version because it is high enough that the ground squirrels here can't jump into them and the bunnies can't forage them. We have a lot of those buggers…and they can destroy a garden. For the price and the height… These beds are 100% worth it. Oh… And find a good chair, grab a glass of wine/beer and get comfortable… there are lots of screws…. But you only do it once per bed. It is worth it, you'll survive.

The 3 foot height makes it look massive, and it will need a lot of dirt to fill it (consider adding a layer of tree branches, etc to the bottom), but I'm excited to have a raised bed to grow vegetables in next year where they will be safe from my dogs and the brave groundhogs that find their way in. The shiny metal color is nice, but may end up spray painting so that it better matches my decor.

I ordered 3 of the 4x4x3 cylinders. They are bigger than they would seem, but overall assemble well. The individual panels can seem a little weak by themselves, but when put together, they are very sturdy. The top and bottom edges are rolled, so they won’t cut you, but the vertical edges of the panels are VERY sharp. Overall, they have been great, and I’d buy them again.

I think I am in good company when I say this is bigger than i thought it would be. I took measurements, and it fits the space I picked for it, but when it’s assimbled, it’s massive. I assembeled this on my own in about 2 hours. It was not difficult, but I could have used an extra set of hands now and then to hold pieces in place. There are nearly 100 nuts that need to be attached to bolts. Once they are all attached and started, a box wrench and drill can speed up the process.
